Details such as boot space and engine size are easy to find online, but rear seat space is much more difficult.

Although it is possible to find measurements for many cars that show the exact rear legroom figure, these are often hidden away in brochures and spec sheets that may no longer be available from manufacturers.

Plus, measurements don't always tell the whole story, as some models with what seems like a lot of legroom could have small rear seats that aren't very comfortable, or are angled in a way that means they have a lot of legroom in reality, even if they don't on paper.

1. Honda Jazz

Best for versatile seating

The Honda Jazz is an affordable car with spacious rear seats. It's the smallest car on this list, but for this type of car, it's a very roomy option. This is only part of why it appears here, though, as it has an innovative feature that Honda calls 'magic seats' in the back.

These seats fold down flat like many other car seats, but they also fold upwards; the seat bottoms can be flipped up to create an extra tall storage area behind the front seats. They can also fold right forward to add extra boot space. They're really versatile and useful, and are the Honda's unique selling point.

The current version of the Jazz is hybrid only, and it's the best one yet, but it's a bit expensive at the moment with prices starting at £17,465, being so new. We've picked a previous-generation version because it's more affordable and even more practical, even though it doesn't have as much tech as the more modern version. It's comfortable, easy to drive and reliable.

2. Mercedes S-Class

Best for luxury

The Mercedes S-Class is one of the most comfortable, luxurious and high-tech cars you can get. There are both standard and long-wheelbase models available, and the latter has more legroom, but even in the standard car there is more space than all bar the tallest people could ever need.

That's because the S-Class is designed for people who are chauffeured - many owners will never sit in the front seats, and instead are driven around in the incredibly comfortable rear seats. There are even functions such as the ability to tilt the front passenger seat forward using a button in the back, just to free up a bit more room. There's an electrically-controlled footrest back there too, and depending on which options have been added, media screens (pictured above) and sunblinds.

The soft suspension and highly insulated interior means that it's extremely comfortable as well - there's very little noise in the cabin on the motorway and it glides over even the bumpiest roads. It's the ultimate car for being in the back seats - but its large size and high running costs mean it's not for everyone.

3. BMW 5 Series Touring

If you are planning on doing a lot of driving, the BMW 5 Series is a great choice. Like all the cars here it has lots of rear legroom - enough for tall adults to be comfortable in there for long trips - but the BMW is also great to drive, whether you're on a twisty road or just a motorway.

The 5 Series is enjoyable around bends, yet the comfortable suspension setup means that it's a great cruiser too. The seats inside are luxurious and supportive as well, and the punchy engines - diesel, petrol or plug-in hybrid - deliver strong performance.

Go for the Touring estate model for the best practicality, as it has a hatchback boot with a split-opening section. The window in the boot door opens separately, meaning you can drop things like shopping into the back without having to open the hatchback, plus it's very handy on a family holiday when the car is loaded up and you just need to grab one or two things from the top of the pile.

4. Skoda Superb

Best for affordable interior space

The Skoda Superb is an extra large family car with an incredible amount of rear legroom, with room for the tallest adults to stretch out and get comfortable for any length of journey.

It's not unique in having lots of legroom but it is one of the best-value options - other cars with this level of space in the back tend to be high-end luxury saloon cars and limousines. The Superb is readily available on the used market and is affordable to buy and run, unlike most other cars of this size.

It's a very impressive car overall too, with punchy but efficient engines and a comfortable driving experience. It's easy to drive, has plenty of performance and a huge boot. There are both hatchback and estate versions to choose from and there are even powerful four-wheel-drive petrol models at the top of the range, as well as more frugal models with diesel engines.

5. Citroen SpaceTourer

Best for total interior space

The Citroen SpaceTourer might not be on your radar - as it's not the most attention-grabbing machine - but don't look past this van-based people carrier if you need maximum space for transporting a large number of people. It's designed to carry a lot of passengers in comfort, and this means that there's loads of room inside - after all, it's closely related to a panel van.

There are three full-size seats across the second row and all can be folded if needed. There's an upright seating position that allows loads of legroom for anyone to sit comfortably, plus extra seats in the third row that are big enough for adults as well.

The rearmost seats can be folded away or removed too, giving you a people mover with lots of space for those in the back as well as a huge boot with room for whatever you need to bring with you. It's comfortable to drive and easy to get in and out of, though it's on the large side and won't be ideal for tight car parks or city streets.

6. Renault Koleos

Best for SUV style

There are many seven-seat SUVs that offer plenty of rear-seat legroom, such as the Skoda Kodiaq and Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace, but the similarly large Renault Koleos is a five-seater only. This means that the back seats are a bit bigger than in those alternative models, and the boot is a really good size as well.

This is a large family SUV so there's a high seating position that allows plenty of rear-seat legroom and a good view of the road from the driver's seat, too. The Koleos is stylish and has a decent amount of standard equipment on all models, including a large portrait-oriented media system on top-spec cars that's packed with features.

The Koleos wasn't a strong seller when it went on sale, so you may have forgotten about it - but it's worth seeking out if you are after a large SUV that's affordable, has a big boot and big back seats with plenty of legroom and headroom.

7. Peugeot Rifter

If you are intrigued by the Citroen SpaceTourer above but feel that it's a little big for your needs, the Peugeot Rifter might be an alternative option - it's a little smaller, but is still based on a van and offers loads of interior space at a very affordable price.

The Rifter features a full row of seats in the back, so there's room for three adults side-by-side, plus a third row with space for adults on short trips or kids for longer ones. These seats can be removed or folded, opening up a van's worth of storage space if you need it.

The seats are upright and offer plenty of headroom and legroom, plus the Rifter is well-equipped, cheap to purchase and good to drive. It's comfortable and surprisingly quiet and composed - without looking at the van-like exterior styling, you might not even guess the Rifter's origins, as it feels very much like a family car from behind the wheel.

8. Tesla Model S

If you're looking for an electric car with a lot of space in the back seats, try the Tesla Model S. The Model X is actually roomier but it's far more expensive, so we've picked the better-value Model S here, which still has plenty of space for passengers in the back.

Since there's no engine or fuel tank, and the batteries for the electric motors are under the floor, this leaves loads of space inside the car. There are also two boots - one in the back and one under the bonnet where the engine would normally be in a traditional car. The Model S is fast, cheap to run and packed with high-tech features.

There are some versions of the Model S available with seven seats - the boot-mounted sixth and seventh seats face backwards and are only big enough for kids, but they could be useful for some drivers. The best-value model has a 60kWh battery, which allows a range of 242 miles on a single charge. Another bonus with Tesla is that you have access to Tesla's 'Supercharger' network of rapid chargers dotted across the UK and beyond, which are all very easy to use.
